Quarter Session Records - Examination of James Brain for Sheep Stealling 1833
The Bedfordshire records included on the Gaol Database and many of the other records featured on this website originate from the Quarter Sessions of both the Borough and the County.
The Bedfordshire records of the Quarter Sessions relating to crime and punishment fall into the following categories:
QSR Quarter Sessions Rolls
QSM Quarter Sessions Minute Books
QGE Gaol and House of Correction - buildings
QGR Gaol reports and papers
QGV Gaol various [includes the gaol registers, correspondence, reports, accounts, lists of prisoners etc]
The Quarter Sessions also performed many administrative functions, which were transferred to County Councils in 1889.
