Extension task 2: Are newspaper accounts or written articles always clear and accurate accounts of the events?
Look at Paul Harrison's account of the story of Lucy Lowe, published in 1993. He gives his account the title: "The Wicked Crime of Lucy Lowe" At the end of his account he says, "The 37 year old mother was indeed a fortunate woman to escape her true punishment."
Tasks
Go through the passage, highlighting all of the words he uses that show he believes Lucy to have been wicked, or a liar, or a murderer.
- Look at all of these passages, and decide whether he gives good evidence for his views.
Now look at the passage dealing with the actions of the Reverend Joshua Kirkman (whom he calls -Kirkham!)
- What would this tell you about the attitude of her employers to Lucy Lowe?
- would this suggest about her work as a servant?
Considering all you have read:
- Is this article an accurate unbiased account of the events?
